TL;DR

Be kind to each other. Think carefully about the words you use. Think carefully about what content you post and promote. Do not violate the privacy or consent of others. Do not use generative AI in your interactions or your projects hosted here.

1. PURPOSE

careful.party was begun as an enclave against capitalist depredation, out of an awareness of capitalism's tendency to absorb functional projects and organizations to address its own dysfunction. It was begun from an awareness of the way that well-intentioned movements, like FLOSS, often end up extending the lifespan of capitalism by providing it with unpaid, or underpaid, labor. Without a clear distinction drawn, and defensive measures erected, between the People and the Capitalists, we cannot hope to assist the former and resist the latter.

The goal of careful.party is to provide a place for people, particularly (but not only) technologists, to begin feeding their efforts into an anti-capitalist alternative, walled off from the capitalists first by the privacy of the tilde and second by the legal tactic of licenses and agreements.

As a liberatory project, we seek to be inclusive to the largest number of community members, with the most varied and diverse backgrounds possible. We are committed to providing a friendly, safe, and welcoming environment for all, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ability, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and religion (or lack thereof).

This code of conduct outlines our expectations for all those who participate in our community, as well as the consequences for unacceptable behavior.

We invite all those who participate in careful.party to help create safe and positive experiences for everyone.

2. VISION

careful.party hopes to aid in mutual support and trust-building between members. It hopes to be both a first home for projects aimed at aiding anti-capitalist efforts, and a safe, non-judgemental, and fun place for anti-capitalists to learn and develop their abilities.

At a time where shoddy work is rewarded with increased profit, where generative AI has mechanized the production of propaganda, dubious claims, and unfit (but profitable) products, where carelessness has become the rule rather than the exception, careful.party provides a place where people prioritizing care and understanding over "velocity" and exploitation can collaborate and cheer each other on. It hopes to be a bulwark against the widespread rot typified by, but neither introduced through nor exclusive to, generative AI.

careful.party strives to be an inclusive community where people of all backgrounds and all technological experience levels can come together for peer education, to make conversation, to enjoy each other's creations, and to generally engage with each other in a caring, careful way.

3. PRESERVATION OF FILES

In the event you are removed from the server for any reason, the files in your home directory (including the directories pointed to by the symlinks in ~/inner and ~/public) will be tarballed and made available to you for download for a period of seven (7) days, provided we have no cause to believe they contain illegal content.

4. EXPECTED BEHAVIOR

• Participate in an authentic, caring, and active way. In doing so, you contribute to the health and longevity of careful.party.
• Excercise consideration and respect in your speech and actions.
• Attempt collaboration before conflict.
• Refrain from demeaning, discriminatory, or harassing behavior and speech.
• If anyone asks you to stop a particular kind of behavior, always err on the side of respecting their wishes. If you believe their request is unreasonable or unfair, ask an admin, but don't respond with hostility.
• Be mindful of your surroundings and of your fellow participants. Alert community leaders if you notice a dangerous situation, someone in distress, or violations of this code of conduct, even if they seem inconsequential.

5. UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR

Unacceptable behaviors include: intimidating, harassing, abusive, discriminatory, derogatory, or demeaning speech or actions by any careful.party member online, at any related events, or in one-on-one carried out in the coduct of careful.party related projects. Community event venues, physical or digital, may be shared with members of the public; please be respectful to all patrons of these locations.

Harassment includes: harmful or prejudicial verbal or written comments related to gender, age, sexual orientation, race, religious choices, or disability; inappropriate use of nudity and/or sexual images in public spaces (such as your ~ pages); deliberate intimidation, stalking, or following; harassing recording; sustained disruption of the work of others; and unwelcome sexual attention.

6. UNACCEPTABLE TECHNOLOGY USE

There are technological behaviors that can also lead to a ban.

Please, in general refrain from:

• Any form of cryptocurrency mining (instant permanent ban)
• Sharing the words or work of other members hosted in "internal" spaces outside of those spaces without explicit permission. (instant permanent ban)
• Using generative AI in your words or work here. (instant permanent ban)
• Using careful.party to distribute pornography, warez, malware, or materials which one might reasonably conclude would pose an existential risk for the community. (instant permanent ban)
• Using careful.party as a compilation or processing backend for local IDEs (e.g., JetBrains, Visual Studio Code) (warning)
• Primarily using careful.party as a relay in a backup system (warning)
• Repeatedly consuming an outsized share of the system's resources (warning)

This is not an exhaustive list, but are things communities such as ours have had to address in the past, and are provided here to give examples of unacceptable conduct and their likely repercussions.

7. CONSEQUENCES

Unacceptable behavior or technology use from any community member, including those entrusted with the maintenance of the server and the enforcement of the code of conduct, will not be tolerated.

Anyone asked to stop unacceptable behavior is expected to comply immediately. If a community member engages in unacceptable behavior, the careful.party administrators may take any action they deem appropriate, up to and including a temporary ban or permanent expulsion from careful.party (meaning your user account and keys would be revoked) without warning.

8. ADDRESSING GRIEVANCES

If you feel you have been falsely or unfairly accused of violating this code of conduct, use the section below to send a concise description of your grievance.

9. SCOPE

We expect all careful.party members to abide by this code of conduct while:

• Engaging with other users locally on the server
• Publishing content hosted on careful.party
• Engaging in community activities, whether physically or virtually

10. CONTACT INFORMATION

To reach an administrator:

• Send an internal email to Lykso at lykso@inner.careful.party
• Send a short message to one of the administrators on the internal careful.party IRC server. The message command is as follows:

  /msg <ADMIN> <MESSAGE>

  For example, to send the message "Hello, admin!" to lykso:

  /msg lykso Hello, admin!

Right now, Lykso is the only administrator.

Methods for contacting administrators from outside the tilde were also included in your welcome email. Please refer to that email if you need to contact an administrator and cannot do so, or would prefer not to do so, using internal channels.
