The Gemini protocol takes inspiration from the old, pre-Web Gopher protocol. You might think of it as a lightweight, document-centric alternative to the Web. Pages are written in a simple, easily-parsed, human-readable markup language. Pages are static and wholly styled by the client viewing them; there is no equivalent to CSS or Javascript. SSL is mandatory, and authentication is achieved via client certificates.
My Lykso pseudonym began on Gemini and only later migrated to the Web. As of December 2024, my gemsite is still active. I run Solene's vger Gemini server on an OpenBSD VM hosted by openbsd.amsterdam. I am in the process of merging my gemsite's contents with this wiki and will be publishing my wiki wholesale to Gemini once I extend my wiki engine to produce gemtext.
Otherwise, I've been keeping my Astrobotany plant watered, I still participate in the discussions on Station from time to time, and I still play Spellbinding once in a blue moon.
I've put together some systems for interacting with different aspects of Gemini, described on the pages below.
